Also known as the champagne coupe or champagne saucer, the coupe is a stemmed glass featuring a broad, shallow bowl. Originally the vessel of choice for champagne drinkers, it has since been eclipsed by the flute. Yet the coupe’s star is once again on the rise thanks to its popularity with the craft cocktail movement. Today, the coupe is used to serve a wide variety of cocktails, even the martini, its more forgiving shape found to be less prone to spillage than the classic martini glass.
And while the enduring myth that the coupe’s shape was inspired by the left breast of Marie Antoinette is now universally accepted to be untrue, this much-loved vessel still carries with it an aura of romance and even sexiness, aided perhaps by the many screen sirens, such as Ava Gardner and Sophia Loren, photographed drinking from them. Which might explain why we’ve embossed a little message on the foot of our Copper Coupes: “With love from Absolut Elyx.”
